Cysts
Cysts are closed sacs or pouches that can form under the skin’s surface. They can contain fluid, air, or other substances.
Common Types of Skin Cysts:
- Epidermoid cysts: These cysts are caused by a buildup of keratin, a protein found in skin cells.
- Sebaceous cysts: These cysts are caused by a blockage of an oil gland.
Symptoms of Skin Cysts:
- Raised bumps on the skin
- Tenderness or pain
- Infection (redness, swelling, pus)
Treatment for Skin Cysts:
Most cysts don’t require treatment and will eventually go away on their own. However, if a cyst is causing discomfort, infection, or is affecting your appearance, your dermatologist may recommend treatment options such as:
- Incision and drainage: A small incision is made to drain the cyst’s contents.
- Surgical removal: The entire cyst, including the sac, is removed.
If you have been diagnosed with or have a suspected skin cancer or have a benign skin lesion that you would like removed, please contact London Skin Surgeon to book a consultation with Mr. Matthew Stodell. During the consultation, he will perform a focused examination and discuss your most appropriate treatment options.
