Melanoma

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can spread rapidly to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early. It often develops from an existing mole or appears as a new, unusual spot on the skin.

Key signs of melanoma include:

  • Asymmetry: One half of a mole or lesion looks different from the other half.
  • Border irregularity: The edges of a mole or lesion are ragged, notched, or blurred.
  • Color variation: The color of a mole or lesion is uneven, with shades of brown, black, tan, white, red, or blue.
  • Diameter larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser)
  • Evolving: A mole or lesion that changes in size, shape, or color over time.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to see a dermatologist for a prompt evaluation. Early detection and treatment significantly improve the chances of a successful outcome.
